Cougs' fall semester one for the books

TWENTY-EIGHT COUGAR FOOTBALL PLAYERS posted a 3.0 GPA or better this past semester. And Cougar Athletics as a whole put together some strong academic numbers.

Among the WSU academic highlights:

  • Of the 28 Cougar football players who posted a 3.0 semester GPA or better, seven of them posted a 3.5 GPA or above: Tyler Bruggman, Jared Byers, Carlos Freeman, John Fullington, Peyton Pelluer, Mitch Peterson and Kristoff Williams,

  • On average, all WSU student-athletes earned a 2.96 semester GPA (all university students averaged a 2.88 semester GPA).

  • Seventy-nine percent of all student-athletes maintained at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA—353/446 (68 percent of men and 91 percent of women).

  • Male student-athletes are maintaining their highest average cumulative GPA — 2.83. Female student- athletes earned their highest cumulative GPA since Spring 2008—3.23.

  • In the 2013 NCAA Graduation Rate report, WSU's 71 percent rate for the 2006-07 entering freshmen scholarship student -athletes ranks WSU third in the Pac-12 Conference (behind Stanford and UCLA). Washington State is one of two Pac-12 Conference institutions whose single year (2006-07) and four-class (2003-07) student-athlete cohorts both graduated at a higher rate than their all-university counterparts (Utah).

  • Seven teams earned an average 3.00 or higher semester GPA—women's golf, varsity rowing, soccer, swimming, tennis, women's track and field/cross country, and volleyball.

  • On average, all student-athletes maintained a 3.02 cumulative GPA, the highest cumulative GPA since Spring 2006.

  • Two hundred twenty student-athletes earned a 3.00 or better semester GPA (49 percent).
