Baseball: Cougs get 'punched in the face'

IT ALL STARTED out so promising for the Cougars this weekend on the baseball diamond. But the Cougs had no answers for the Beavers again on Sunday and dropped their second straight, and the series, to No. 5 OSU.

OSU's Michael Conforto drove in three runs and No. 5 Oregon State defeated Washington State 8-1, Sunday in the rubber game of the series. WSU, meanwhile, couldn't bring a man across the plate until the eighth inning.

And Donnie Marbut sounded downright disgusted with the Cougs' ability to respond to adversity.

"We got punched in the face today and had no reaction," Marbut said. "We were given opportunities and didn't do anything with them."

The Beavers (27-7, 11-4 Pac-12) scored the only runs they needed in a two-run first inning against Washington State (16-16, 7-5) starter Jason Monda (1-3).

OSU's Jace Frye (7-1) gave up one run on three hits in eight innings to earn the win. The lone Cougar run came in the eighth when Nick Tanielu tripled and scored on a ground ball off the bat of P.J. Jones.

Washington State next travels to Gonzaga at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
