COMMIT: In-state 4-star recruit goes crimson

WHAT A WAY for CougFans to start their weekend. Marysville's Austin Joyner went crimson on Friday night. He might be a 4-star running back but his heart is on defense and he'll be lining up in the defensive secondary for Washington State.

Austin Joyner out of Marysville-Pilchuk High tweeted that he had verbally committed to Mike Leach and the Cougars.

Joyner chose Washington State over offers from Washington, Boise State, Arkansas, Oregon State, Colorado and others. He rushed for over 1,500 yards and 21 touchdowns last season but has said he thinks his best position at the next level is clearly at cornerback.

"I've just been thinking about it a lot lately and it seems more logical for me to go the defensive back route," Joyner told in a recent interview. "This year I played cornerback (for Marysville-Pilchuk) and I enjoyed it. I didn't play as much on defense because my team needed me on offense. That's what I'm going to play in college, though."

Joyner rushed for over 1,500 yards and 21 touchdowns last season (he rushed for over 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns as a sophomore.) But he already has a strong bond with his future position coach, DBs coach and d-coordinator Mike Breske.

"I've been talking with 'Coach B' since I was in the ninth grade," Joyner says. "We have a good relationship going and I like that they've been on me for a while."
