T Gerald Sterling, BUCK Emmitt Su'a-Kalio and S Markell Sanders were no longer listed on the official WSU roster as of today. Sterling and Su'a-Kalio would have been redshirt freshmen this season, Sanders was a true freshman.
Cougfan.com was told by two independent sources close to Sterling and Su'a-Kalio who asked to remain anonymous that academics were at issue. Sterling won't return, and could join a school/program closer to home in Alabama. Su'a-Kalio will not return later this summer to enroll in summer school but it was unclear if he might try and return to WSU down the road.
Sanders only officially joined the football program in January. It is unknown the reason he is no longer with the program. WSU under Mike Leach generally does not announce, confirm or comment on attrition, players one day simply are no longer listed on the roster. SID Bill Stevens when asked by CF.C about the trio no longer being on the roster said WSU does not discuss team matters.
Su'a-Kalio looks to be the more significant departure of the three. He was behind the other two BUCKS on the chart but he was also the best hand-down pass rushing specialist this spring on the d-line.
Sterling this spring hadn't shown he was likely to move up the chart, nor had Sanders. The latter two may not have played much or at all this coming season, but their leaving still decreases overall depth in the short team. That's the glass half-empty view. The glass half-full view is that WSU can now go about replacing them in this recruiting class with better players who also have a higher ceiling.
Sterling was listed fourth on the latest WSU depth chart at nose tackle, behind Moritz Christ, Robert Barber and starter Toni Pole. Su'a-Kalio was third at the BUCK behind Kache Palacio and Ivan McLennan, both of whom who are battling for the starting job. Sanders was the No. 3 free safety, behind Beau Glover and Taylor Taliulu.
