4-star WR will see WSU coaches this weekend

MEMBERS OF THE WASHINGTON STATE coaching staff will be in California this weekend working football camps. At one of those camps will be Desean Holmes, a four-star wide receiver prospect out of Pasadena.

Holmes (5-11, 170) out of Muir High said he'll be at Santiago High in Corona on Saturday where the Cougar coaches will be providing instruction.

Holmes named Paul Volero (area recruiter) and Dennis Simmons (WRs coach) along with a USC coach as those who have stood out in particular during the recruiting process.

"They're just good to talk to," said Holmes.

Holmes, the No. 7-ranked receiver prospect in the country by Scout.com, said he originally planned to wait until February to make the call but his decision will now come sooner than that.

"Probably around the fifth game, I had thought Signing Day but you don't want to wait too long and the door is going to close," said Holmes.

HOLMES HOLDS OFFERS from most of the Pac-12 with rides from WSU, Arizona, ASU, Cal, OSU, UCLA, USC, Utah, UW as well as others from outside the conference. He said family atmosphere and distance will be important. He plans to take an unofficial to USC on Tuesday.

Among the things that stand out about Holmes: his ball skills and route running. Scout.com calls him the most explosive receiver in the state of California.

"Holmes has similar size, speed and quickness to Christian Kirk although he's not as thick or physical. He catches the ball very well and is a legitimate deep threat. He's shifty after the catch and is the kind of player able to take a short hitch, make two or three defenders miss and take it to the house," Scout.com's Greg Biggins said earlier this year.

Holmes was named the co-MVPs of the Serra League as a junior in 2013 while with Bishop Alemany High. He transferred to Muir but the Los Angeles Times reported a few days ago he may return to Alemany prior to the fall.

As a junior, Holmes racked up 62 catches for 1,219 hashes (19.7 avg.) with seven TD grabs.
