Future Coug can get under a defender's skin

FUTURE COUGAR wide receiver Deontay Burnett didn't take part in The Opening, which means he didn't see the ton of pub that comes with that particular event. But he was at the Battle of the Beach 7v7, and was putting on one whale of a show before disaster nearly struck.

Scout.com's Greg Biggins was at the Battle of the Beach 7v7 earlier this month and watched wideout Deontay Burnett out of Gardena, Calif. set the field on fire.

"He scored 4 TDs in the first half of the first game," Biggins said of the Serra High.

There were one-handed catches, over-the-shoulder grabs, tip-toe footwork along the sideline and multiple instances where Burnett shifted into another gear and blew past the coverage.

But frustrations eventually boiled over, and Burnett narrowly avoided injury.

"The opposing corner cheap-shotted, dove at his hip out of bounds and he had to go to hospital but he was OK. They feared a hip fracture but it wasn't anything serious," said Biggins.

Burnett verbally committed to the Cougs a couple days later.

Burnett is listed at 5-11, 160 but looks to have big hands and an ability to leap higher than the other guy when going up for the ball.

NOTABLE NOTE:
Burnett and Serra will square off against Bellevue High this season on Sept. 6 in Oceanside, Calif.
