Projecting WSU redshirts includes surprise

MIKE LEACH DOESN’T talk in absolutes when it comes to which players – true freshmen and veteran – will redshirt. The potential to replace an injured player always exists, and it doesn’t hurt if the opponent has to prepare for as much personnel as possible. That said, here’s how we see things shaping up this season in the WSU redshirt department. And there’s one candidate who will surprise you.

CF.C has learned from a source who requested anonymity that second-year safety Isaac Dotson is a probable redshirt this season – specifically, a medical redshirt.

Dotson played in the first two games, or 17 percent of the season. An injured player may be granted a medical redshirt if his participation doesn’t exceed 30 percent and no participation takes place in the second half of the season, conditions Dotson would satisfy right now.

Leach and WSU do not acknowledge injuries so it’s unknown what injury Dotson may have, though he missed large portions of fall camp and when he has practiced, has not always looked as fluid as he did as a true freshman.

Third-year junior Gabe Marks, as Leach has said, is likely to redshirt. Given how productive seniors Isiah Myers and Kristoff Williams have been at the Z, in concert with how great a look Marks has been giving the starters on defense when on the scout team, this feels like a big win-win for the Cougs.

Brett Bartolone also has not played. The slot receiver has been plagued by injuries ever since his star turn as a freshman in 2012. He too appears ticketed for a redshirt season. Only two true freshmen have played by our count: Patrick Porter and Calvin Green.

We expected we’d see Sulaiman Hameed last week but did not – he was listed in the two deeps at strong safety for Portland State and is again this week against Oregon. His participation is something to keep an eye on this Saturday. As is that of Marcellus Pippins.

Pippins is listed as the No. 2 field corner but his name has yet to appear in the participation section of the official game logs this season.
