NFL Cougar Highlights: Week Five

TODAY’S SETBACK TO Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos aside, the Arizona Cardinals — with a 3-1 record — are off to a strong start, as is their rookie safety from the Palouse, Deone Bucannon.

The Washington State great has started three of the Cardinals’ four games this season and is averaging five tackles per game. His 20 total tackles — 19 of them solo — are fourth-best on the squad.

Bucannon was the Cardinals' first-round selection (27th overall) in the 2014 draft, and just the second safety ever selected by the team in the first round -- and the first since fellow Cougar standout Ken Greene in 1978.

Here’s how all the NFL Cougs performed in Week 5:

Husain Abdullah, S, Kansas City, 6th season: Posted eight tackles (5 solo) in the Chiefs’ 22-17 loss to San Francisco.

Deone Bucannon, S, Arizona, Rookie: Recorded six solo tackles in the Cardinals’ 41-20 loss to Denver.

Jed Collins, FB, Detroit, 5th season: No recorded stats from the Lions’17-14 fall to Buffalo.

John Fullington, T, San Francisco, rookie: Did not play; assigned to the 49ers’ practice squad.

Brandon Gibson, WR, Miami, 6th season: Did not play; bye week.

Chris Ivory, RB, New York Jets, 5th season: Carried the ball nine times for 44 yards in the Jets’ 31-0 loss to San Diego.

Travis Long, LB, Philadelphia, 1st year: Did not play; on injured reserve.

Ropati Pitoitua, DE, Tennessee, 6th season: The Tacoma native posted four tackles (2 solo) in the Titans’ 29-28 loss to Cleveland.

Jeff Tuel, QB, Buffalo, 2nd season: Did not play; assigned to the Bills’ practice squad.

Marquess Wilson, WR, Chicago, 2nd season: Did not play; on injured reserve with a designation to return.
