NFL Cougar Highlights: Week Eight

IT WILL TAKE more than a broken finger to keep Tennessee Titan defensive end Ropati Pitoitua away from the frontlines. The Washington State great returned to action on Sunday after missing the last contest with a broken finger suffered in week six.

Pitoitua didn’t show any ill effects of the injury in Tennessee’s losing effort against Houston, partaking in four tackles--including his second sack of the season.

This isn’t the first time the Tacoma native has played with broken bones. He broke his hand during the 2013 preseason and again this preseason, but missed nary a regular season game because of it.

Pitoitua’s return wasn’t enough to change the fortunes of the scuffling Titans, however. The 30-16 loss to the Texans was the clubs’ sixth setback through eight games.

Here’s how the NFL Cougs performed in week 8:

Husain Abdullah, S, Kansas City, 6th season: Assisted on one tackle in the Chiefs’ 34-7 defeat of St. Louis.

Deone Bucannon, S, Arizona, Rookie: Recorded eight tackles (4 solo) in the Cardinals’ 24-20 victory against Philadelphia.

Jed Collins, FB, Detroit, 5th season: Carried the ball twice for 5 yards and made a special teams tackle in the Lions’ 22-21 win against Atlanta.

John Fullington, T, San Francisco, rookie: Did not play; assigned to the 49ers’ practice squad.

Brandon Gibson, WR, Miami, 6th season: After sitting out the last two games, the Puyallup native suited up for the Dolphins’ 27-13 win against Jacksonville, but caught just one pass for 7 yards.

Chris Ivory, RB, New York Jets, 5th season: Ran for a pair of touchdowns—both from 2 yards out—in the Jets’ 43-23 loss to Buffalo. Rushed the ball 13 times for 43 yards.

Travis Long, LB, Philadelphia, 1st year: Did not play; on injured reserve.

Ropati Pitoitua, DE, Tennessee, 6th season: See stat recap above.

Jeff Tuel, QB, Buffalo, 2nd season: Did not play; assigned to the Bills’ practice squad.

Marquess Wilson, WR, Chicago, 2nd season: Did not play; on injured reserve with a designation to return. He is eligible to suit up for the Bears in week 10.
