WSU trip moves Cougs up DB's leaderboard

DEFENSIVE BACK Willie Sykes out of Spring, Texas tells that Washington State, Mike Leach, new defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and the Cougar players made a strong impression upon him during his official visit weekend on the Palouse. Indeed, the Cougs have moved up his leaderboard, the 6-0, 180-pounder out of Spring High said.

“They moved up, for sure,” Willie Sykes said of Washington State on Monday morning.

Sykes said Mike Leach, Alex Grinch and the Cougar players combined to make it a trip to remember.

“They’ve got some real good, honest guys on that team and Coach Leach is a really good coach – he’s so down to earth and relaxed. That stood out to me, I liked that,” said Sykes.

Sykes said it was especially important on his checklist this weekend to get a good handle on the Cougs’ defensive coordinator because he’s also his potential future position coach.

“I wanted to get a chance to meet him and see what his vibe was like and he’s a really good dude… He came from Missouri and coached one of my good friends (David Johnson) so I kinda know him already,” said Sykes.

Sykes is one of those defensive backs with a skills set who could play either safety or cornerback at the next level.

“It was great. I had fun and I liked the people – the coaches and the teammates. They’ve got some real good guys on that team,” said Sykes.

Unfortunately, the connection with Sykes was lost a couple minutes into the phone interview and CF.C has been unable to reconnect with him, though we’ll keep trying. Sykes ran a 4.46 in the 40 at an NFTC camp this past summer in Houston and measured in at a “legit 6-feet” says analyst Ahmard Vital.

He plays with a physical nature with good cover skills. WSU offered him back in November after seeing tape of his senior season. He holds known offers from WSU, Utah, Nebraska, Fresno State, Purdue, Minnesota and others.

It is thought Sykes is headed to Nebraska this coming weekend for his fourth official visit, having already tripped to Purdue and Minnesota.
