Report: Dennis Simmons talking with Sooners

A REPORT CITING unnamed sources says Washington State outside receivers coach Dennis Simmons interviewed last week at Oklahoma. The report from thefootballbrainiacs.com noted that it "cannot confirm at this time whether an offer has actually been made."

If the report is accurate, it would seem a logical possibility because of the connection between Simmons and new Oklahoma offensive coordinator, Lincoln Riley.

Riley and Simmons worked together on Mike Leach's staff at Texas Tech for seven seasons, and after Leach was ousted at Tech, Riley and Simmons both went to East Carolina with Ruffin McNeil. Riley has spent the past five seasons as offensive coordinator for the Pirates. Simmons spent two seasons at EC before reuniting with Leach when Leach landed the Washington State job in late 2011.

Simmons has been with Leach for 13 seasons all told.

If Simmons were to leave WSU it would be a blow to Cougar recruiting in southern California, where he has made major inroads over the last three years.

Riley got his coaching start under Leach and ran a version of the Air Raid at EC, which he's said he will employ at Oklahoma. Several recent media reports surrounding Riley's hire have stated Leach and Riley remain close.

Oklahoma has two assistant jobs yet to fill, one on offense. Head coach Bob Stoops fired co-offensive coordinator/receivers coach Jay Norvell along with OC Josh Heupel after the season.

In what could be viewed as either a coincidence or a sign of Simmons' interest in the Sooners, WSU verbal commitDahu Green this week received an offer from Oklahoma.
