Schafer Rd.) in Spokane Valley. In addition, a celebration of his life will be held in Seattle on Jan. 25 from 1-5 pm at Club Sur (2901 1st Ave. S.).

Memorial donations may be made in his name by visiting the WSU scholarship fund website at www.cougarathleticfund.com.

Chris was killed Dec. 28 in the Florida Keys when he was struck by a car while riding a bike. He played for the Cougars from 1985-88 and went on to play seven seasons of professional football, including one with the Chicago Bears, before becoming an academic counselor. He held bachelor's and master's degrees from WSU and was a fixture at Cougar games over the years.

In an obituary, his parents and sisters wrote of Chris, "He was the brightest light, so filled with energy, passion, compassion, irreverence, humor and affection. His magnificent smile and ability to make people laugh will forever be with us, as will the sorrow of never seeing it again, and the gratitude for having ever seen it at all."

KQQQ reports the suit seeks unspecified damages and states Rockey’s surgery cost $10,000 with insurance paying about $2,000 and WSU Athletics paying about $3,600. Su'a-Kalio left the Cougar program in the spring of 2014 with two independent sources telling Cougfan.com the departure was due to academics. • KLAY THOMPSON GOES OFF
Klay Thompson, making a late push to be selected to play in his first NBA All-Star Game, poured in 40 points Wednesday night in Golden State’s 117-102 win over Indiana. Backcourt partner Stephen Curry leads Western Conference guards with more than 958,000 votes. Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, Thompson’s childhood hero, is second with more than 862,000 votes. Thompson has received almost 171,000 votes.

Thompson hopes to be selected by coaches as a reserve. The All-Star Game will be played Feb. 15 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. • IN CASE YOU MISSED IT, FURNEY BACK WITH JETS
One day after Rex Ryan was fired, former Cougar kicker Andrew Furney tweeted on Dec. 30 that he was back with the Jets. The Jets cut Furney in August. Although Furney performed well in the preseason, including nailing a 51-yarder in the preseason opener, he had virtually no shot to make the squad as kicker Nick Folk had recently signed a 4-year, $12 million contract that included $2.1 million in guaranteed money. But that was then.

  • THE WSU FAN OF THE WEEK
There was a lot to notice in WSU’s men’s basketball upset at Cal on Sunday ... The scoring of Jordan Railey ... the clutch free-throw shooting of Ike Iroegbu and DaVonte Lacy down the stretch ... the now-standard double-double of Josh Hawkinson ... Ernie Kent's ice-water-in-his-veins cool. But perhaps hardest to miss was the biggest fan the Cougars had in the stands: NBA star and former Cougar scoring machine Klay Thompson. Klay was into the game from start to finish and capped it off afterward by shaking hands with every member of the Cougar team. This past weekend’s games in the Bay Area marked the first time Thompson had been able to see the Cougars in person since joining the Golden State Warriors following his WSU career.

  • FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS BREAK RECORDS
For those who believe the four-team playoff format isn't big enough to determine college football's national champion -- that it ought be eight or 16 teams -- then the television ratings of this past week's two semifinal games should to be music to the ears. The Ohio State-Alabama and Oregon-Florida State games became the two most-watched programs in cable TV history. Nothing says "expand the format" like massive TV ratings. Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times has a great breakdown of the historic viewing in today's paper. Click here to read it.

  • TWEET BY JUNIOR LONGRUS RAISES A QUESTION
Cougar junior forward Junior Longrus tweeted the following in the early morning hours of Tuesday:

That of course might mean he couldn’t find a parking space in the mall earlier that evening. Or perhaps was handed a bag of cheddar popcorn instead of the caramel-coated. Ya just never know. But a very natural question that would stem from a comment like that is this one: Is his dwindling playing time taking a toll? While Longrus has started 10 of 11 games this season for the Cougs, he is averaging just 14.9 minutes per contest. The last time out, against San Jose State, Longrus played but five minutes. Against Santa Clara, he logged 10 minutes. WSU plays host to UC Davis (9-1) on Sunday at 3 p.m. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.

\r\n\r\nGarner Ekstran, the Pride of Burlington-Edison, was a standout defensive end for Washington State from 1958-60 and went on to an all-star career in the Canadian Football League that paid him $8,000 a year. Today, he’s a retired dairy farmer and cancer survivor. In THIS ARTICLE from Thursday’s Skagit Valley Herald he reflects on the golden era of professional sports in which he played – an era with no agents, little changing of teams, and a source of lifelong friendships.

\r\nCougar junior forward Junior Longrus tweeted the following in the early morning hours of Tuesday:
\r\n\r\n

Doing my absolute best not to be frustrated.

— Junior Longrus (@Junie_Bo) December 23, 2014
\r\n
\r\n\r\nThat of course might mean he couldn’t find a parking space in the mall earlier that evening. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.\r\n

\r\n\r\nFormer Washington State football star Timm Rosenbach has been named head coach at Adams State, an NCAA Division II school in Alamosa, Colo. Rosenbach, a former NFL quarterback and longtime college assistant coach, becomes a head coach for the first time. He spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator at UNLV, where head coach Bobby Hauck was recently fired.

\r\n \r\nRosenbach starred at Pullman High School when his father, Lynn, worked in the WSU Athletic Department. He passed up his senior year at Washington State after finishing seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1988. Rosenbach, 48, was quarterback coach at WSU from 2003-07 before coaching at Montana, New Mexico State and UNLV. He replaces the retiring Marty Heaton at Adams State. -- Howie Stalwick

\r\n\r\nFormer Washington State basketball stars Klay Thompson and Aron Baynes are putting up career-best numbers in the NBA. Thompson, Golden State’s standout shooting guard, ranks 11th in the league in scoring (21.6 points per game) and 3-point field-goal shooting percentage (43.9). Both numbers are career bests, along with his 3.4 assists, 1.3 steals, 0.9 blocked shots, 45.2 field-goal shooting percentage and 87.4 percent free-throw shooting percentage. Baynes, a forward-center with San Antonio, scored a career-high 16 points Saturday in a 99-93 loss at Dallas. He also posted a team-high 10 rebounds, two short of his career high, in his sixth start of the season. Baynes averages a career-best 7.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 16.9 minutes played.

\r\n\r\nWashington State wide receiver Vince Mayle was named to the All-America Third Team by Phil Steele, with three more Cougars earning All-Pac-12 accolades. Mayle was also named All-Pac-12 first-team by Steele while senior wideout Isiah Myers, redshirt-junior left tackle Joe Dahl, sophomore cornerback Daquawn Brown were each named All-Pac-12 Third Team.

\r\n\r\nMayle finished the regular season tied for the national lead with 106 receptions and posted a Pac-12-best 1,483 yards, both WSU single-season records. Brown started 11 games and played in 12, leading the Cougars with 82 tackles in his sophomore campaign. \r\nDahl started all 12 games at left tackle and surrendered just one sack for the Cougars’ national-leading passing offense. Myers appeared in all 12 games, making 10 starts and finishing second on the team with 78 catches, fourth-most in the Pac-12 and third-most in WSU history. His 12 touchdown catches tied for the conference lead and tied for the second-most in WSU history.
