NFL-bound Xavier Cooper overcomes disability

A LEARNING disability and the labeling that came from it undermined Xavier Cooper's confidence as a teenager. "People are laughing at you and there is peer pressure," the WSU lineman and soon-to-be NFL draft pick told the Sporting News this week. "I defeated the odds. I've done everything to prove to myself that I can do this; that I'm a wise man. You just have to keep believing in yourself."

Writes TSN reporter Rana L. Cash: “When they told Xavier Cooper who and what he was, the lies took form and began to shape his destiny. The stigma stuck like cement. He wasn't quite as sharp as the other kids, couldn't learn as quickly, was unable to read something complex and process it in the way a ninth grade student should."
