Cougar baseball: Is next coach OSU x 2?

WASHINGTON STATE may be looking to tap into the national championship success of Oregon State’s baseball program with word from noted baseball analyst Aaron Fitt that Marty Lees is the frontrunner for the job. Lees, currently an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma State, spent 11 seasons at the other OSU.

"Expecting a big day in the coaching carousel. One thing I'm hearing buzz about is OK State assistant Marty Lees as a frontrunner for Wazzu," read the tweet from Fitt.

Before he joined Okie State in 2012, Lees spent 11 seasons at Oregon State (as pictured above) including the last three as the associate head coach.

Less, a native of Lakeview, Ore., worked primarily as the defensive coach for infielders and catchers in Corvallis and spent his last six years as the Beavs’ recruiting coordinator. Oregon State with Lees on board won the College World Series in back-to-back years (2006-07).

At Oklahoma State, Lees is the primary coach for the infielders, according to his bio page. He is also the third base coach.

The Oklahoman called him “an elite recruiter and defensive teacher” in a recent article. The Cowboys, seeded No. 1 at their own regional this past weekend, were upset Saturday and Sunday and eliminated from college baseball’s postseason.

ANOTHER NAME we’ve been hearing is Mark Wasikowski, an assistant coach at Oregon. Wasikowski is in his fourth season in Eugene where he serves as the Ducks' recruiting coordinator and third-base coach. He also coaches the team’s hitters and outfielders.

Following the 2013 season, Perfect Game named Wasikowski one of 10 Division I assistant coaches who are “ready to lead," according to his UO bio page.

Wasikowski, a 20-year coaching veteran, knows the Pac-12 well. He came to Oregon with 10 years of experience at Arizona. The Ducks made the postseason this year with a strong finish but were eliminated in regional play.

MEANWHILE, Travis Jewett is considered one of the top assistant coaches in the country. The former WSU assistant spent five years in Pullman.

He’s in his third season with Vanderbilt as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator.

Jewett is from Tacoma and also has experience at Gonzaga and Edmonds Community College.

Vanderbilt has advanced to the Super Regionals, where they will play at Illinois this weekend.

NOTABLE NOTE:
Six Pac-12 baseball teams made the postseason, not one made it out of the regionals. UCLA, ASU, Oregon State, USC, Cal and Oregon all fell in the double-elimination format. UCLA was the No. 1 national seed, marking the second straight season a Pac-12 team ranked the No. 1 national seed fell in the first round (Oregon State).
