Four key dates in WSU's 2015 season

ASK JUST ABOUT any college football coach and they'll say the margin between winning and losing, between going to a bowl game and staying home for the holidays, is often very thin indeed. For CougFans in 2015, there are three, perhaps four dates that factor directly into that divide.

There is a world of difference between playing a night game (starting at 7:00 or 7:30) at home vs. playing that game on the road.

For Cougar players, there are several hours of travel tacked onto a game ending after 10 p.m. That has an effect on preparation for the next day and week. It led to a league-wide outcry by school officials and their fans after the increased number of night games during the 2013 season.

The night games are driven by TV and given the $3 billion deal the league has with Fox and ESPN, it's certainly understandable they want to maximize their ratings and flexibility by putting games on later.

The Arizona schools also want to play their home games at night in September and October because of the heat.

Four WSU game times for '15 have been set including two road games with early start times (Rutgers, UW). So far, so good.

WSU away game times expected to be set within the 12- and six-day windows before the game is played are:

Cal, Oct. 3
Oregon, Oct. 10
Arizona, Oct. 24
UCLA, Nov. 14

Arizona is a likely night game because of the weather. Cougar fans looking for every possible advantage in '15 should be hoping for as many day games as possible out of the other three.

Last year, WSU started the season with two games on the road (including the Rutgers game in Seattle) that began at 7 p.m. or later, and a pair of 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. starts on the road.

NOTABLE NOTES:
  • The 11 a.m. start time, put in place to reduce some of the night games, will be utilized by at least three teams this season -- WSU is one of them. The Cougs host Portland State on Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. in their season opener.

  • The Cougs play 11 of their 12 games on Saturdays this year, with the lone exception a Friday night tilt for the Apple Cup on Nov. 27. Last year, WSU had three games on Thursdays and Fridays.
