James Williams stars in WSU scrimmage

PULLMAN – True freshman running back James Williams no doubt hopes to have many more Saturdays down the road like the one he had today as Washington State held its second scrimmage of this bye week.

The scrimmage focused in large measure on the team’s youngsters, like the weekly Thursday Night Football sessions, and the 5-11, 185-pound Williams turned it into a personal showcase. He ripped off a series of 5- to 15-yard runs and grabbed a 10-yard pass from Peyton Bender to convert a third down.

He ran hard and fearlessly and received considerable vocal praise from offensive line coach Clay McGuire.

As for Bender, the second-year freshman, he looked poised throughout and fired a TD pass to D.J. Thompson.

Freshman QB Tyler Hilinski also got in on the fun. After getting sacked while working behind the third-unit offensive line, the second-team OL entered the game and Hilinki proceeded to lead a nice drive highlighted by a nifty Kainoa Wilson catch-and-run for 20 yards. Wilson broke two tackles along the way and received a congratulations from senior safety Taylor Taliulu afterward. The drive was capped by Alijah Lee’s short run and well-placed foreman on linebacker Drew Griffin.

Walk-on QB Christian Jorgenson stepped into the scrimmage and the third-team o-line returned. Unfortunately for Jorgenson, the o-line’s struggles continued. Austin Brown and Jeremiah Mitchell each broke through for sacks and Logan Tago and Kingston Fernandez combined on a sack.

THE COUGARS OPENED THE practice with 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills. Several plays pitted the second-team offense against the first-team defense and Bender looked sharp in this limited session before the scout teams were inserted.

Luke Falk fired TD passes to Tavares Martin Jr., Gerard Wicks and Dom Williams against the scout team. During the starting defense’s work against the scout team, they registered several sacks and nabbed three interceptions with one each coming from Kache Palacio, Parker Henry and Kirkland Parker.

Parker also snared an interception in skeleton drills, off Falk.

  NOTABLE NOTES:

  • Kicker Matt Abramo, offensive lineman Amosa Sakaria and receiver C.J. Dimry were limited Saturday. Safety Isaac Dotson was absent from practice.

  • On special teams, the Cougars focused on blocking on kickoffs and punts.

  • While the youngsters were scrimmaging, starting QB Luke Falk and starting center Riley Sorenson spent time on the side working on under-center snaps.
