WSU Apple Cup stats just as ugly as the score

IN A GAME like the 108th Apple Cup on Friday, one number leaps off the stats page and tells you all you need to know about the 45-10 score.

WSU committed seven turnovers, and UW scored 28 of their 45 points off those turnovers.

More numbers and items of note:

-WSU finished the regular season 8-4, the most wins for the Cougs since 2003 (10-3).

-Gabe Marks, who was injured in the fourth quarter, caught seven passes for 58 yards. He has 99 receptions for 1,125 yards on the season. On the postgame show, radio sideline reporter Jessamyn McIntyre said on the postgame show the medical staff was treating Marks’ ankle.

-QB Peyton Bender and WR John Thompson each made their first career starts.

-DL Hercules Mata’afa, who has not started a game this season, recorded a sack Friday to give him six sacks on the season.  That places him in a tie for the season sack total with senior starting DL Darryl Paulo (Paulo combined with senior DL Destiny Vaeao on a sack Friday). Vaeao, meanwhile, made a career-high nine tackles Friday, 2 1-2 for loss.

-Marcellus Pippins recorded his third interception of the season, moving him into a tie with Shalom Luani.

-Speaking of Luani, he tied for the game-high in tackles Friday with Peyton Pelluer and Jeremiah Allison.  Each had 11 stops.

-Dom Williams caught his 11th touchdown of the season. Now with 30 on his career, he trails Jason Hill by two for the all-time WSU mark.
