WSU recruiting: Midyear JUCO signing day next week

THE MIDYEAR junior college signing period begins a week from Wednesday. Will Mike Leach and Washington State be players?

Leach typically takes few JUCOs.  There could, however, be not only a few junior college players in the class but some could sign as early as Dec. 16 and head to Washington State in January. Here's a look at some of those in the Cougs' orbit:

DE Garrett McBroom (6-3, 265)  NE Oklahoma A&M
He picked up his WSU offer less than a week ago, visited Purdue this past weekend and trips to Washington State this weekend. Listed as a third-year sophomore by Scout.com, he would have 2-to-play-2.

DE  Phillip Napoleon (6-5, 280)  Mt. San Jacinto
He visits Washington State this weekend.  Napoleon posted 41 tackles in seven games this season, with 5 1-2 sacks. Listed as a second-year sophomore on Scout.com, he would have 3-to-play-2.

OL Tyson Rising  Ventura (6-5, 290)
There might not be a match here given the time crunch. Rising has said he'll trip to Oregon this weekend after having visited ASU this past weekend. While Rising enthusiastically tweeted out WSU and Leach visited him in-home this past week, it's rare to see a prospect signing with a school he hasn't officially visited. Still, recruiting can change on a dime so it's a situation worth watching over the next few days. Listed as a second-year sophomore by Scout.com, he would have 3-to-play-2.

The midyear junior college signing period runs from Dec. 16 - Jan. 15.  All other junior college players in this class would sign on Feb. 3, along with the vast majority of prep players.

NOTABLE NOTES:
--WSU chief of staff for football Dave Emerick told CF.C last month the Cougs do not have the ability to count a midyear signee back towards the previous class.  (A school is allowed to do so if they took less than a full load of 25 the class before).

--LB Chima Onyeukwu  (6-3, 220) Contra Costa is a longtime verbal pledge to WSU and it is thought he'll be coming in the spring, but there's been some chatter on the internet he could graduate early and be able to sign as soon as Dec. 16. Stay tuned.

--They're not midyear JUCOs but two prep WSU verbals have signed financial aid agreements and are expected to graduate early from high school this month and enroll at Washington State in January: CB Jalen Thompson and ATH Justus Rogers. It would make sense for both to officially trip to WSU this weekend since recruiting shuts down Sunday but CF.C has yet to receive confirmation from Thompson and Rogers if that's the case.

-  Washington State offered Pima safety Markell Simmons earlier in the cycle but with JUCO safety Robert Taylor coming on board this weekend, and Simmons not expected to visit WSU this weekend, that ship may well have sailed.
