CFC TV: Grinch has Cougar D rotating fast & furious

PULLMAN - WSU defensive coordinator Alex Grinch said it wasn’t good work the Cougar D got in Tuesday, it was “great” work. Many established starters and key contributors got less reps, by design, but Grinch estimated 80 percent of the stop corps got a lot of time. The nice thing about these early practices, Grinch said, is that the focus isn’t on game plan but fundamentals and technique.

Grinch talked a little bit about Miami and how game film preparation will be unique since Miami changed coaches in the middle of the year.

By design, during the final team portion of practice the young players got a ton of reps. On defense, the players were being shifted out as an entire unit, with Grinch saying that wholesale movement was about trying to get as many guys as many reps as possible and keeping practice at a good tempo.

Along with the youth, a few starters did see some reps late in the session, including defensive backs Darrien Molton, Marcellus Pippins, Isaac Dotson and Charleston White.

Grinch equated the extra practices that come with a bowl game as a spring practice session, and for the younger guys making the most of the opportunities.  The full video is above.
