Is this Mike Leach’s new assistant coach?

MIKE LEACH is reportedly planning to hire a former pupil. Dave Nichol, who worked as a student coach and graduate assistant on Leach's first Texas Tech staffs, is said to be Leach's choice for outside receivers coach to replace the departing Graham Harrell, according to FootballScoop.com.

From FootballScoop.com ...

"Sources tell us Mike Leach is planning to hire former East Carolina offensive coordinator Dave Nichol to fill his receivers position, which opened with Graham Harrell heading to North Texas."

Nichol was a student coach under Leach in 2000-01 (QBs/WRs) and served as a GA from 2003-05 (OL). He spent this past season as East Carolina's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. From his East Carolina bio:

"Nichol, who has served an active role on spread scheme offensive staffs that have made a combined 10 bowl game appearances since 2000, recently completed his third season as the Pirates' outside receivers coach after joining (Ruffin) McNeill's staff in 2012."

Under Nichol the ECU offense this past season was the No. 28 passing offense in the nation, throwing for 3,375 yards and 7.14 yards per attempt.  But ECU went 5-7 this past season and Ruffin was fired this month putting Nichol and the other assistants in limbo.

Before ECU, Nichol spent five seasons in the Pac-12 at Arizona, where he crossed paths with Leach's football chief of staff Dave Emerick, who spent 2010-11 in Tucson.

Nichol was first a graduate assistant at Arizona before being quickly promoted to full-time status as the Wildcats' outside receivers coach, he then added inside receiver responsibilities in 2011.
