The dark side of the Sun Bowl: Ticket sales

JUST AS FEARED, the date, time and location of the Cougars' Sun Bowl tilt against Miami has put a damper on the hopes of a crimson-filled stadium.

Washington State has sold but 1,700 of their 6,000 ticket allotment for the Sun Bowl, WSU director of ticket operations Paul Finn told Cougfan.com on Friday afternoon.

Any unsold tickets from WSU’s allotment have to be purchased by the school.  The Sun Bowl payout to WSU is $2.15 million but it is not uncommon for schools to break even or lose money on most bowl games given the level of expenses involved.

Oregon took 243 players and staff, 297 band/cheerleaders and 99 others and spent $3.8 million on two College Football Playoff trips last year, with a net loss of $677,004 for the national championship game, according to CBS Sports.  Michigan State's expenses for the 2015 Cotton Bowl were $2.68 million, according to mlive.com.

Washington State lost money in 2013 at the New Mexico Bowl (payout $750,000). In 2013, the Cougs traveled to Albuquerque their band and spirit squad, plus administrative staff members, strength coaches and others in addition to the Cougar players and coaches. Flight, hotel and meal costs add up quickly for a group that size.

According to WSU Cougar Tickets twitter account, Sun Bowl tickets are priced at three levels: $72, $67 and $57. If WSU were to sell 1,300 more tickets in addition to the 1,700 already sold, and the remaining tickets were split evenly amongst the three price levels, **WSU could be on the hook for $196,000.

**NOTE: The Pac-12 subsidizes up to half of unpurchased tickets for its teams in contracted bowls.

"We know it’s tough being on the 26th,” Finn said  “We encourage fans to donate if they can so that we can send some soldiers to the game.”

WSU has already donated over 500 tickets to the local military in El Paso, with 400 of those having been purchased by Cougar fans.
