That silence may continue a while. Indeed, Leach has been known to take his time in hiring new assistant coaches at Washington State.
Last year, Alex Grinch wasn't hired as defensive coordinator until Jan. 14, with WSU officially announcing it two days later. The hire took 1 1-2 months, with former DC Mike Breske dismissed on Nov. 30. It took roughly the same time frame for outside linebackers coach Roy Manning's hire. He was hired on Jan. 18 to replace Paul Volero, who had been fired along with Breske on Nov. 30.
Three years ago this month, inside receivers coach Eric Morris left Washington State for Texas Tech on Dec. 14. It wasn't until nearly a month later, on Jan. 12, that Leach hired Dave Yost as his replacement -- and it wasn't until Jan. 18 that WSU officially announced Yost's hire.
So for fans itching to know who Leach is going to hire as his new outside receivers coach, if history is any indication, you might want to get comfortable. Harrell was reported to be leaving WSU for the offensive coordinator's job at North Texas on Dec. 10. The school made it official on Dec. 18.
The recruiting in-home visitation period opens back up on Jan. 14. It would be at least a mild surprise if Leach didn't have his guy in place by then and out on the recruiting trail.
Nichol has spent the past four seasons at East Carolina. This year was his first as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He coached the outside receivers the previous three seasons. Prior to ECU, he spent five seasons at Arizona, coaching outside receivers for four seasons (2008-11) and adding the inside receivers to his duties in '11. (He was a graduate assistant his first season at UA). His time at Arizona overlapped with that of football chief of staff Dave Emerick.
Nichol worked three seasons (2003-05) as an offensive graduate assistant under Leach at Texas Tech. He also played at Texas Tech but before Leach arrived.
Scottie Montgomery was named East Carolina's new head coach eight days ago. He has yet to officially announce his staff hires.
From FootballScoop.com on Dec. 14: "Sources tell us Mike Leach is planning to hire former East Carolina offensive coordinator Dave Nichol to fill his receivers position, which opened with Graham Harrell heading to North Texas."
