WSU’s Destiny Vaeao with furious finish in NFLPA bowl

DESTINY VAEAO wanted the football. The Washington State d-tackle was involved in a trio of key fourth quarter plays in helping lead his National Team to an 18-17 win in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl on Saturday.

Early in the fourth quarter, Vaeao beat a double team and spun around American team QB Travis Wilson (Utah) leading to a fumble. The turnover set up what would prove to be the winning points for Vaeao’s squad.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Vaeao blew past his man and stripped Wilson.  The Utah QB was able to recover but the five-yard loss forced a punt on fourth-and-12.

On the final play of the game, Vaeao recovered a desperation pitch by QB Stephen Rivers to cap the win and a furious fourth quarter by Vaeao.

Cougar wide receiver Dom Williams was also on the winning side.

Williams had three passes thrown his way in the game according to ESPN stats. Two were incompletions (both appeared uncatchable)  with the third a 22-yard garb late in the third quarter down to the American team’s 28-yard line.

Williams' catch got the National team in field goal range and helped it close the gap to 17-15.

Vaeao and Williams were two of three Cougar seniors taking part in All-Star games. Next Saturday, Washington State offensive tackle Joe Dahl lines up for the North squad in the Senior Bowl (11:30 a.m.; NFL Network).
