And with a rules change this year there are more than two months for an underclassmen who has not hired an agent to change his mind and opt instead to return to school. So CougFans might not know until the May 25 deadline if Que Johnson is returning to school or going pro.
Ernie Kent seemed to give his blessing for such an extended tryout, telling the Spokesman-Review after the Cougs’ Pac-12 tournament loss ended their season; “I think every underclassman in the country should throw their name into the draft and I think it's going to be that way. And then the next step in all that is, there's a combine that's invited. There's going to be about 70 players, there's going to be 35 of them that are underclassmen. The rest are going to be your seniors, your European players, your D-League players. That's a small field from so many players out there. And then somebody might have an opportunity to go do a tryout somewhere, so they need to explore that. Josh, Que, Ike.”
Josh Hawkinson has already said he’ll return to WSU. The assumption has been that Ike Iroegbu, who will be a fourth-year senior next season, would also return to Washington State.
Ny Redding and Renard Suggs previously announced their transfers, allowing for two additional openings in Kent's 2016 class. (Kent previously signed point guard Milan Acquaah (6-2, 185) and forward Jeff Pollard (6-8, 235) in the early signing period).
If Johnson were leave, Kent would have another opening to fill and could make the 2016 group a 5-man signing class.
The regular signing period in basketball runs from April 13 - May 18.
For underclassmen declaring early (having not signed with an agent) who ultimately chose to return to school, the deadline used to be the day before the college regular signing period began. Now, the signing period runs its course, ending a full week before an underclassman is required to make his final decision.
In addition to being allowed to participate in the combine, underclassmen declaring for the draft can also participate in one NBA team tryout per year. The combine will be held May 15.
