Baseball: Cougs win a wild one

WASHINGTON STATE blasted its way to a 10-0 lead over McNeese State after three innings on Saturday but there was drama yet to come.

In the end, the Cougs took the fourth game of the series 12-9 and snapped a five-game losing skid.

The Cougars tallied 15 hits and the bullpen held off a ninth inning rally in the win.

Washington State (18-33) received multiple-hit games from six different players including Patrick McGrath and Cameron Frost who each collected three hits and three RBI. Shane Matheny reached base five times, scored three times and tied a school record with four walks against McNeese State (29-23).

McNeese State scored three runs each in the fourth and fifth innings, and two more in the seventh to cut WSU's lead to 10-6.  Derek Chapman stole home on the play to give the Cougars a 12-9 lead in the eighth and the WSU bullpen used three pitchers to get through the ninth, stranding two runners to seal the win.

WSU starter Scotty Sunitsch (4-1) earned the win and  Trenton Dupre earned his third save of the season.

The Cougars next head to Yakima to host Washington in a nonconference game Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
