Athlon ranks Mike Leach, all 128 CFB coaches

IS BOBBY PETRINO a better head coach than Washington State’s Mike Leach? Is Mark Richt? Athlon thinks so.

Athlon is out with its ranking of all 128 FBS coaches and slots Leach at No. 26 in the land.  (Louisville’s Petrino is ranked No. 12 on this year's list while Miami’s Richt is No. 16).

“Entering his fifth year in Pullman, Leach seems to have Washington State poised to challenge for eight or nine wins on a consistent basis. After a surprising loss to Portland State in Week 1 last season, the Cougars rebounded by winning nine games and finished 6-3 in league play – the program’s first winning mark in Pac-12 action since 2003. Under Leach’s watch, Washington State is 21-29 overall and has played in two bowl games over the last four years. Success is nothing new to Leach, as he went 84-43 at Texas Tech from 2000-09. Leach is one of college football’s top offensive-minded coaches and returns one of the nation’s top quarterbacks for 2016 in Luke Falk," says Athlon.

The rankings appear to be heavily weighted on the previous season.  Last year, Athlon ranked Leach No. 47 nationally.

As reported earlier, Leach is ranked No. 4 in the Pac-12 on this year's Athlon list. Last year, Athlon slotted him No. 10 in the conference.
