Kicker Matt Abramo leaving WSU program

KICKER MATT ABRAMO, who spent his first year in Pullman redshirting, is leaving Washington State, a source with knowledge of the situation told CF.C.

Abramo, out of Petaluma, Calif.,  plans to walk on at nearby Cal in search of playing time, the source said.

The Cougs’ starting kicker, Erik Powell, connected on 20-of-26 field goals and was 49-49 on extra points this past season.

Washington State also lists kickers Mitchell Cox, Brett Schafer and Zach Charme (the Cougs’ starting punter) on the current roster.

WSU under former special teams coach Eric Russell chose to use a scholie in the 2015 class on a kicker, with Abramo (6-2, 170) signing with the Cougs over an offer from Air Force.  Abramo was limited at times last season on the practice field, and this spring had been unable to move up the depth chart to challenge Powell.

The Cougs open the season Sept. 3 at home against Eastern Washington.
