Tracking NFL Cougs as training camps open

FOR NFL FANS, CouGreat Deone Bucannon has become a household name -- he's been at the forefront of a revolutionary new type of safety-linebacker hybrid sweeping the NFL. Bucannon officially enters his third NFL training camp with the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday, but some other Cougars have already gotten started.

Joe Dahl – OL, Detroit. Rookies reported July 23 to the Lions' camp and Dahl (pictured above) has been playing guard with the second-string offensive line, moving to tackle when the third team comes in.

Ivan McLennan – DE, Atlanta. Heading into training camp, which kicked off Wednesday for the Falcons, McLennan seems to have impressed the coaches this offseason. He'll need to continue to do so in order to survive the cuts and make the 53-man squad.

Destiny Vaeao -- DL, Philadelphia.  Reports on Vaeao in the Philly media have been scarce. The first practice for rookies was on Monday.

Dom Williams -- WR, San Diego. All unsigned free agents have a tough road to travel but word around cyberspace is Williams looks to have a decent shot to make the club or the practice squad. Veterans and rookies report July 29.

Xavier Cooper  -- DL, Cleveland. Coming off a solid rookie season with Cleveland (11 tackles, 1.5 sacks) and is looking to take the starting role at defensive end this year. Veterans report Thursday.

Marquess Wilson – WR, Chicago. He was put on the physically unable to perform) list after having surgery on his left foot. He is reportedly in a walking boot with no timetable as to when he will return. One Bears beat writer pointed to Wilson likely missing regular season games before returning. Rookies and veterans reported Wednesday.

Chris Ivory – RB, Jacksonville. Ivory is expected to battle it out with TJ Yeldon for the starting role at running back. Verterans reported Wednesday.

Ropati Pitoitua – DE, Tennessee. The 31-year old veteran could be in a battle to stay in the mix at defensive end this year with the Titans.  He played in just five games last season and totaled four tackles, with the Tennessean beat writer opining it's likely the Titans will either restructure his $3 million contract or release him.  Rookies and veterans report July 29.

Vince Mayle – WR, Cowboys. Mayle spent last season on the practice squad and will be fighting to rise up a deep WR depth chart. Rookies and veterans report July 29.

Travis Long – DE, Free Agent. Long was cut from Philadelphia on Wednesday morning after two days in camp.  Long is trying to come back from his third ACL tear in four years.

Brandon Gibson - WR, Free agent. Gibson was injured with the Patriots last fall camp and was waived by New England in March, though media reports this spring before he was cut said he looked sharp.

John Fullington - OL, Free agent.  He was cut from cardinals in May.

Kache Palacio – LB, Free agent. He was released by the BC Lions on Monday.

Former Coug safety Husain Abdullah retired from the NFL earlier this year due to health risks relating to concussions and head trauma. Abdullah said he suffered five concussions in his seven seasons with the Vikings and Chiefs. The Chiefs were looking to resign Abdullah, but his retirement has them searching elsewhere with their camp getting underway July 29.
