HALFTIME: Cougs in a battle with Eagles

LUKE FALK PUT up some crooked numbers in the first half and Gabe Marks made one of the best TD catches you’ll ever see. But the Washington State defense, according to Mike Leach, was trying to do too much and the Eagles were nearly matching the Cougs on the scoreboard, 28-24, at the break.

Falk has tossed three touchdowns – two to Marks and one to Kyle Sweet.   Unofficially, Falk was 21-27 for 243 yards with one INT at the break.  Marks has 7 catches for 92 yards and 2 TDs.  Jamal Morrow rushed for the other Cougar TD on a 5-yard burst. Cougar running backs have 9 carries for 51 yards (5.7 ypc) through two quarters.

On defense, WSU started strong forcing a three-and-out on the first series but things changed dramatically after that.  Eastern is throwing quick passes and stretching the Cougar D sideline-to-sideline, more than happy to gain 6-7-more yards a pop.

WSU’s stop corps looked a step slow in reacting much of the half -- the Cougs aren’t wrapping up well enough and the pass rush simply isn’t getting there. The Cougars finally got a sack (Hercules Mata’afa) in the final two minutes to force an EWU punt.

What adjustments will defensive coordinator Alex Grinch make at halftime? Or will the answer simply be better execution? The Cougs have zero takeaways and have surrendered 264 passing yards through the first half.
