5 keys for Cougs vs. Vandals

THE COUGARS get one more chance to get the ball rolling on the 2016 season before conference play -- the games that really count -- begins. Struggling Idaho should be very beatable, but WSU shouldn't underestimate the amount of fire in this old rivalry.

WHEN WSU HAS THE BALL
1. Stretch the field vertically.
Idaho will likely keep the secondary back, a la Boise State, to force a lot of underneath throws.  Luke Falk, however, cannot let the Vandals dictate what he does.

2. Don't stop its own drives.
The Cougars’ penalties and miscues halted as many drives as Boise State did last week.  Third-and-long’s are difficult no matter who you play.

WHEN WSU IS ON DEFENSE
3. Focus on the tight ends.
Idaho has a pair of solid TEs, but has only marginal talent at receiver and running back.

4. Pressure Linehan.
Junior QB Matt Linehan led the Sun Belt in passing last year, but has really struggled under increased defensive focus in the first two games this season.

INTANGIBLE
5. Avoid drama.

Mike Leach and the Cougars need to put the Vandlas and head coach Paul Petrino to bed as early as they can.  Nothing swings emotions like a big play on special teams.

Kickoff: 11:00 am / Pac-12 Network
Matt Moore's Prediction: Cougs win 51-13
