WSU comes out blazing leading Ducks at half

PULLMAN - Washington State's all-anthracite Cougars came out of the tunnel with their hats on fire to start their Pac-12 opener against Oregon tonight.

The Cougs carried a 28-14 halftime lead into the locker room with Luke Falk completing 20 of 25 passes for 198 yards and one TD to Gabe Marks. Gerard Wicks rushed for 2 TDs and Jamal Morrow piled up 86 all-purpose hashes and a TD.

The Cougs stalled Oregon's first possession with some nice work on defense. Falk trotted out with his offense and drove 65-yards. capping the drive with a short pass to Marks (pictured above) for a touchdown on WSU's first chance with the football.

Oregon got a short field after a nice kickoff return from Charles Nelson setting up a game that has the look of an old fashioned shoot out.

Typically, any game with Oregon features a quick strike offense. With the Cougar Air Raid, one expects the clock to stop frequently. Well, that said the first quarter went quickly and ended in a 7-7 tie.

WSU benefited from good run blocking from The Goon Squad and snapped the tie on the first play of the second quarter. Gerard Wicks took the ball up the middle for a 4-yard touchdown as the Cougs regained the lead 14-7.

Falk has completed passes to nine different receivers.

Cougar defense is slowing down the running game of the Ducks.

"I think he's done pretty good so far," said Mike Leach about the first half play of Falk.

The Cougs hold a 279-207 edge in total yards.
