What They're Saying: Cougs Keep Rolling Edition

UCLA CAME into Pullman looking for revenge, and the Cougs made sure there would be no reverse repeat of last season's dramatic fireworks. The Cougs are now 3-0 in Pac-12 play and Luke Falk says the club has yet to play its best ball.

Regardless, it's clear people far and wide are taking the Cougars very seriously. Here's a sampling of what was said in the wake of last night's 27-21 victory ...

“Field goals? Clock management? Turnovers and top-end special-teams play? Three rushing touchdowns and zero passing touchdowns? I don’t even know you anymore, Cougs.”

--Kevin Gemmell, ESPN

It took one final coup by the Cougar defense and an unexpected boost from the new punter, but Washington State scored its third straight win over a respected but sputtering Pac-12 program.

--Dale Grummert, The Lewiston Tribune

“I was proud of our guys for sticking in there and playing tough like they did. Because the conditions and our opponent, you have to be tough. We could have finished better but we had a lot of awful good stuff in between to make this happen.”

— Mike Leach

“Let us now give proper respect to the other rampaging Pac-12 team in our midst – or, to be more accurate on a gloomy, gloppy Saturday night in the Palouse, in our mist.”

--Larry Stone, The Seattle Times

“It’s obvious that whatever anticipation continues to build for the Friday showdown after Thanksgiving, there are still lessons to be learned for the Cougs along the way. It’s tempting to forget that, though”

--John Blanchette, The Spokesman-Review

“Last year, Washington State knocked off UCLA in dramatic fashion in the Rose Bowl, scoring the game-winning touchdown with three seconds left. Safety Adarius Pickett said he thought the Bruins ‘owed them one.’ When they had a chance for revenge, the Bruins fell short.”

--Thuc Nhi Nguyen, Los Angeles Daily News

"If they're going to disrespect us, we're going to beat them."

--Peyton Pelluer (pictured above) on UCLA warming up on WSU's side of the field

"This time, Josh Rosen couldn’t even attempt to save UCLA.”

--Jesse Dougherty, Los Angeles Times

“In an unpleasant, grinder of a game, Washington State proved to be the team best equipped to execute its goals when things were not easy. On the heels of a similar toughness-measuring contest at Stanford, the Cougars beat up, then outlasted UCLA, 27-21, on Saturday in Martin Stadium.”

--Jacob Thorpe, The Spokesman-Review

“(River) Cracraft, a senior, led all WSU receivers with six catches for 74 yards in a performance which included an incredible leaping one-handed reception that wouldn’t have been out of place in the movie The Matrix.”

--Stefanie Loh, The Seattle Times

“The Cougars are rolling and they’re winning with more than just Luke Falk’s arm.”

--Tim Booth, Associated Press

Washington State has now entered a fourth straight week of a running game all can marvel at.  The ground game helped carry the Cougars to victory without a passing touchdown. Cue the Twilight Zone theme.”

--Zach Anders, Cougfan

“I’ve never in my career been around a run game as awful as this. That has to be the first thing we address. It’s staggeringly poor and we have to fix it.”

—Jim Mora, UCLA coach

“… every defender that lines up across from (Gabe) Marks plays with a chip on their shoulder. They’ve all heard the hype, and now they want a piece of one of what many consider one of the best receivers in the nation. Not only is Marks constantly facing each teams best DB, double teams and various zone coverage combinations have directly affected his targets, which then reflect in the stat sheets.”

—Skyler Cracraft,

“Washington State continues to make us prematurely lick our chops about the Apple Cup.”

--David Lombardi, ESPN
