Davante Cooper, 6-11, 235-pound big man out of Tyler JC in Texas, and his Tyler teammate Kwinton Hinson, a 6-4, 175-pound guard/wing, are expected to sign with the Cougs after verbally committing to WSU in recent weeks. Cooper will have 3-to-play-3, while Hinson is the more tradition JUCO recruit who has 3-to-play-2.
As a freshman last season, Hinson (pictured above) averaged 13.5 points in 28 games at Tyler.. He shot 45 percent from the floor and 36 percent from downtown.
Hinson, originally out of Fairmont, N.C., prepped his senior season at Bishop Gormon High in Las Vegas. Coming out of high school, he was rated three stars by Scout.com.
Cooper chose WSU over offers from Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Purdue and Central Florida. He played in 26 games (with one start) this past season for Bradley as a true freshman, averaging 8 minutes, 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. He also made the honor roll at Bradley this spring as a true freshman but ultimately decided the Bradley basketball program wasn’t the right fit. He enrolled at Tyler this summer
Originally out of Georgia, Cooper prepped at Orangewood Academy in Southern California, where he played both basketball and volleyball. Cooper was the 2014 Express League MVP by the Orange County Athletic Director’s Association and a first-team all-conference selection in the San Joaquin League by the Orange County Register. He then enrolled at a prep school in Florida before signing with Bradley in 2015-16 over offers from Tennessee, Central Florida and Tulane.
Kent isn't done on the recruiting trail for this class, and we can't rule out an early signing period surprise. The 2016-17 squad that opens the season Friday has four seniors: F Josh Hawkinson, G Ike Iroegbu, C Conor Clifford and G Charles Callison, which gives Kent two spots to fill in the 2017 class beyond Cooper and Hinson.
The early signing period runs for just one week, from Nov. 9-16. The regular signing period is April 12 - May 17, 2017.
