WSU recruiting trail: Here come the Cougs, as the in-home visitation period kicks off Sunday

THE APPLE CUP IS in the books and there's no time to sit around and lament the outcome for the Cougar coaches -- recruiting now takes center stage for Washington State. Indeed, Mike Leach and his Wazzu assistants will move into a new, crucial phase on the recruiting calendar in less than 24 hours.

The off-campus, in-home visit period opens Nov. 27 this recruiting cycle -- tomorrow.  Sunday is the first day coaches can make in-person visits off campus to prospects and high schools (referred to on CF.C as the "in-home" visit period).

The in-home visit period is split up around the holidays and final bowl games, running from Nov. 27 - Dec. 11 and then opening back up after the New Year from Jan. 12 - 28.   National Letter of Intent is Feb. 1, 2017.

All nine WSU assistant coaches either today or tomorrow are expected to pack a bag and hit the recruiting trail running.

Important to note: Head coaches only get one in-home visit per recruit -- assistant coaches can have as many as six, so strategy comes into play.

Leach in the past has visited in-home a handful of WSU targets in December -- usually in the case of midyear transfers and/or early high school enrollees.  But for most WSU recruiting targets in the class, that single off-campus face-to-face with Leach will come down the road in January. Indeed, WSU has back loaded that part of the recruiting process since Leach arrived. Put another way, Leach doesn't generally use his one in-home with a recruit in December who plans on making his decision in mid- or late-January.

CF.C WILL BE making calls to recruits and coaches to see if anything might have changed but it is believed there is presently one potential early January arrival on the WSU commit list:  OL George Moore out of College of San Mateo.  JUCO WR Derrion Grim, formerly a Nebraska Cornhusker now at San Joaquin Delta, is believed to be graduating with his AA in the spring, as is DE Preston Hendry out of Orange Coast.

Also important to keep in mind: an early January enrollee, one not yet widely known, could also of course pledge WSU between now and the start of the midyear JUCO signing period.  That begins Dec. 14, and runs through Jan. 15, 2017.

WSU's OFFICIAL VISIT calendar this recruiting cycle figures to again be stuffed full into the five official visit weekends in December and January.  (Four, really, when you consider Leach generally uses that final weekend to bring in a handful of preferred walk ons on official visits.  There are two available weekends in December, three in January). WSU generally hasn't brought in official visitors mid-week under Leach but it's worth mentioning as a possibility.

WSU did, however, just bring in three official visitors for the Apple Cup -- its first known official visitors for a football game weekend in two seasons.  As you read this, CF.C's Braulio Perez is burning up the phone lines and texting like a teenager, working to set up interviews with QB Blake Barnett, WR Carmoni Green and LB Faavea Faavea.

-- WSU has 16 known verbal commitments. You can check out the list below. be sure to scroll through.

-- WSU is expected to sign a full class of 25 when Signing Day rolls around the first Wednesday in February. To that end, and this has always held true since Leach has been in Pullman: if an elite prospect decides between now and Signing Day he wants to come to WSU, and the feeling is mutual,  Washington State is not going to turn the prospect away. Regardless of how the scholie math and/or the verbal numbers might look at the time, whether if Wazzu has already filled its recruiting needs at his position, the Cougs will find a way to make room for a big fish.

-- Per the NCAA rule book, six (6) in-person off-campus contacts per prospective student-athlete are permitted between now and Jan. 28 excluding the quiet and dead periods from Dec. 12 - Jan. 11, with no more than one off-campus visit permitted in any one calendar week (Sunday through Saturday) or partial calendar week.

-- CF.C loves this time of the recruiting year.  Buckle up the chinstrap, and come along on the ride with us.
