WSU recruiting: Taking a long look at the Cougar defensive tackle recruiting in the 2017 class

COUGFAN.COM MEMBERS who follow recruiting closely have long asked the question this 2016-17 cycle: what’s going on with Wazzu defensive tackle recruiting? Here’s who we think Cougar recruiting fans will want to keep tabs on in the days and weeks to come.

In no particular order, four d-tackle types of interest from California and Hawaii:

Miki Suguturaga (Punahou/Honolulu)

Kurtis Brown (Liberty/Bakersfield)

Austin Faoliu (Mater Dei/Santa Ana)

Thomas Toki (CSM/Mountain View)

Headed into the first week of December, those four stand out most to us at DT.

Faoliu (6-4, 285) and Brown (6-3, 260) are both verbally committed to Arizona.

Brown sent a DM that he’s officially visiting WSU on Jan. 13. We’ve been unable to connect for a longer interview but we’ll keep trying.

Brown tweeted out a pic of his in-home visit this week with WSU showing himself on crutches with Clay McGuire.  He also tweeted out that three weeks after his knee injury, he has 70 percent mobility (both tweets at bottom of article).

Here is a recent CF.C interview with Faoliu.

Meanwhile, Suguturaga (6-5, 260) is listed as a DE by but he could be that DE-could-become-DT type of recruit, and the same goes for the 260-pound Brown (who is categorized as a DT by

Update: CF.C caught up with Suguturaga just as he was getting on a plane for an official visit to Virginia. He didn't have long to talk but did tell CF.C he is officially visiting Washington State on Jan. 13.

We also hope to be able to touch base again with Toki to see where things stand between him and WSU.  We’ll get to some of the Hudl reels on this quartet in a moment but first …

IT’S ALSO WORTH NOTING some Cougar fans were verklempt last February (and still are today) that WSU didn't sign a prototypical defensive tackle in the '16 class.

There may be a caveat there.

WSU did sign a pair of true freshmen in Lyric Bartley and Danny Bender in the 2016 class. And Mike Leach has said both could wind up developing into d-tackles.

Now, whether that might be as soon as 2017, who knows. We’ll see what the spring brings for the duo, with spring also generally the first time of the calendar year updated weights are released by WSU.

The 2016 roster lists Bartley at 6-3, 260 pounds. When Bartley signed back in February, he was listed by WSU at 245 pounds. Similarly, Bender is listed on the roster at 6-3, 255.  When Bender signed, he was listed at 240 pounds by WSU.
