Cougars to finish top 20 in ESPN rankings

WASHINGTON STATE won’t finish the season ranked in the AP or Coaches top 25 polls -- the Cougs entered bowl season just outside the top 25 and then lost to Minnesota. But ESPN says WSU ranks among the nation’s top 20 teams.

Wazzu is ranked No. 20 in ESPN’s Football Power Index.  The remaining bowl game outcomes don’t look to adversely affect the Cougars in the FPI.

WSU finished the 2016 season with a 14.1 in the FPI.  ESPN says the FPI “represents how many points above or below average a team is."

Washington State (8-5, 7-2 Pac-12) finished just behind Colorado and Stanford in the FPI.  The two Pac-12 schools each have a 14.2 score., in its CBS 128 rankings updated Jan. 2, slot the Cougars as No. 25 in the land.
