Cougar recruiting: 12 recruits are coming to town this weekend on official visits to Washington State

COUGAR RECRUITING went from fast to furious with the final contact period opening up Thursday. There are just three official visit weekends left before Signing Day and from what we’ve pieced together in talking to recruits and prep and junior college sources, Mike Leach and Co. at Washington State will kick of the first weekend Friday by hosting double-digit visitors.

Note: Plans can always change so the CF.C weekend visitor list could see the names change between now and the weekend. Indeed, CF.C has rewritten this article three times since this morning as things did change. It’s hard to say it enough at this time of year: what was true in recruiting might not be the case an hour from now. That out of the way, here’s the very latest on this weekend’s official visits, plus video.

WSU looks to be hosting 12 recruits, including five of six of the Cougar verbals from the Pacific Northwest. One is rated 4 stars, seven are rated 3 stars, three are rated 2 stars -- and one is being evaluated by and has not yet been assigned a star rating.

That would be DE/RUSH Willie Rodgers (6-5, 230).  He holds known offers from WSU and Arizona in the Pac-12 along with Nevada, Colorado State and others. The Michigan transplant spent this past season at Valor Christian High in Highlands Ranch, Colo., about 30 minutes south of Denver.  Here’s some info from an article before his senior season and one from this past November.

Another name that might be new to followers of WSU recruiting: WR Dominick Silvels, a  6-3, 190-pound wideout out of San Diego’s Henry High (pictured above). He has eight known offers including WSU, Utah State, San Jose State, Nevada and others.

The visitors this weekend consist of a DT, QB and RB -- along with two offensive linemen, three wide receivers and four DE/RUSH types.  Five are uncommitted, six are WSU verbals and one just this morning changed to a WSU soft verbal

B.J. Thompson is rated 2 stars on but CF.C has heard from multiple sources Utah is taking a run at the Cougar commit and trying to get him to Salt Lake City an official visit. It wasn’t known at press time if Utah has put a scholie on the table or if they’d wait for him to visit so they can offer him in person.

Three prospects who had been on the CF.C visitors list until today are no longer coming this weekend, sources tell CF.C (the visit list sometimes take a while to update so if they still show, they won't for long). They are:  4-star OL and Cougar verbal Dontae Powell, who will visit WSU next weekend (Jan. 20).  Arizona soft verbal DT Kurtis Brown and WR Bruce Judson are no longer tripping this weekend to WSU. It was unknown after talking to sources if those two will reschedule with WSU, we’ll keep pursuing and will let you know on the ‘Suites what we find out.

The Cougars are recruiting one of the 12 visitors as a preferred walk on. Hint: He’s the brother of the visiting quarterback.

Assuming that none of you have to work today, here's the full list of who is coming to town this weekend, followed by player card (links) and video.
