Hawaii 3-star DT talks WSU visit, where things stand with Cougs now that Joe Salave’a is gone to Oregon

THE BIG QUESTION most Cougar recruiting fans had about Miki Suguturaga’s visit to Washington State this weekend – how do things stand between Suguturaga and Wazzu now that the coach who was recruiting him for the Cougs, Joe Salave'a, is no longer in Pullman? CF.C asked the 3-star DL prospect out of Honolulu's Punahou School about that.

Suguturaga (6-5, 260) said things haven’t changed for him when it comes to Wazzu despite Salave’a’s departure to Oregon. Suguturaga, who comes across as exceedingly polite and a man of few words on the phone, hasn't named his leaders yet but the guess from this chair is it will come down to WSU and Utah.

“I hung out with Coach (David) Lose. It’s not that different I guess, Coach Joe leaving, I don’t really know how it was before but (my feeling for WSU) honestly feels still the same,” Suguturaga told CF.C.

In addition to Lose, WSU's defensive quality control assistant, Suguturaga of course also sat down this weekend for a talk with head man Mike Leach, who like Suguturaga is Mormon.

“It was a nice talk, I got to talk with him about going on a mission and what not,” said Suguturaga.

The plan right now, Suguturaga said, is to go on his two-year Mormon mission after graduating from high school, but it’s not yet set in stone.

“I’m still thinking I’m probably going to do that,” he said.

Meanwhile, the facilities at Washington State and hanging out with the Cougar players were a hit for Suguturaga.

“It was really good,” said Suguturaga. “All the facilities and what not are awesome and very … I guess I don’t know how to explain it, they’re just new and very nice.”

Suguturaga will visit Vanderbilt next and then Utah  on the final weekend before Signing Day.

Mom accompanied him to Pullman and though they hadn’t talked about the visit in depth yet, it sounds like she enjoyed WSU.

“I think she really liked it as well,” said Suguturaga.
