What are odds of WSU Signing Day surprise (or three) next Wednesday?

THE CONVENTIONAL WISDOM in recent years held that with the ever-increasing tracking of recruiting by sites like, and its social media-savvy Cougar fans, signing day surprises were mostly a thing of the past. But barring a lot of answers in the final days before Signing Day, that notion might be turned on its head next Wednesday.

For starters, CF.C continues to try to conclusively pin down the identity of one official visitor from last weekend. Mr. Z turned out to be DE Dallas Hobbs, who committed Sunday.  But Mr. X?  He remains unmasked.

It's also worth remembering Hawaii DE Christian Mejia told CF.C he was committed for months before we reported his pledge.

Meanwhile, there remain a large contingent of uncommitted WSU targets just six days out, particularly in wide receiver recruits. Jamire Calvin announced he's down to WSU and Nebraska. Another 4-star wideout, Braylon Sanders, told CF.C Wednesday he's down to WSU, Colorado State and Cincy.

The Cougs are also targeting JUCO Isaac Zico, who is keeping things close to the vest and still with a leaders list of five    It's still unclear where Michael Onyemaobi, Travell Harris, Jeremiah Hawkins and Bryan Thompson will ultimately sign (it was reported yesterday Utah led for Thompson). Texan Reggie Roberson is making his announcement Monday. CF.C, though not for a lack of trying, has been unable to connect with Roberson but a recent report indicated he was leaning towards West Virginia.

We think Mike Leach will sign one QB next Wednesday: longtime 4-star commit Connor Neville, and the Cougs also have an intriguing walk on coming in John Bledsoe, you may have heard of his father Drew.  But emphasis on the word "think" and we're continuing to keep our eyes and ears peeled for if a second scholie QB emerges at the lat minute. And wouldn't that be a doozy, a heretofore unknown QB on Signing Day.

WSU has four o-line commits, and CF.C projects the Cougs signing 5-6 hosses when it's all said and done. Is OT Jonathan Nathaniel, visiting this weekend, next to go crimson? How about Mo Unutoa?  Or Jaxson Kirkland?

Could Tacoma OL Quazzel White circle back and re-commit to the Cougs between now and Wednesday?

Meanwhile, the Cougs looked stacked at DE/RUSH but for the second straight class there are a seeming lack of DT-types. Miki Suguturaga would be a great get. But is there also another DT-type or two - a signing day surprise - still to come?  We're clicking on new DL coach Jeff Phelps' twitter page often, waiting to see if he tweets out another celebratory ice cream pic.

WSU has 24 known commitments and room for 26 this class. So the Cougs are getting close to full ... maybe. At the same time, if a top target of WSU wants to jump on board, WSU will find a way to make room -- no matter if the numbers say they're "full" overall, or at his position.

Bottom line: Here in the final days before Signing Day for the 2017 class, it feels like there are more moving parts than in recent years. A signing day surprise(s)?  It's sure starting to feel that way.
