Recruiting: A look at the WSU area recruiters for the 2017 class

THE INK is barely dry on those freshly signed National Letters of Intent the new Cougars signed as part of the 2017 class. But who handled the recruiting duties for those newest Cougs - who were the area recruiters? We take a look in this notebook.

We'd say months of hard work paid off for WSU last week, but that'd be a mistake. The Cougar coaches had been hard at work on the 2017 class far longer than that, recruiting many in the class stretching back to 2015.

It was a strenuous, determined group effort in landing every single recruit. Washington State uses a group recruiting effort, so it's never just about one assistant coach. The future position coach is ALWAYS going to be greatly involved, and integral, to securing the commitment. That said, each WSU assistant coach was a point man over the course of the recruiting cycle -- the area recruiter. Here's how we broke it down.

Wide receiver Jamire Calvin: Roy Manning

Wide receiver Travell Harris: Derek Sage
Note on Harris: The Florida native was one of the Wednesday surprises for Cougar fans. Both he and Jamire Calvin were big gets for the Cougar coaches and the 2017 WR crop. On Harris in particular, I've watched his highlight tape probably 3-4 times since last week. One thing that stood out to me was how elusive he is with the ball in his hands. He is a speedster, but he's also got great instincts and knows how to balance his speed with sweet moves. My early take is he can be a big-time player in Leach's Air Raid offense.

Linebacker Willie Taylor: Grinch (Manning also key)

Offensive lineman Jonathan Nathaniel: Clay McGuire

Linebacker Will Rodgers III: Manning

Defensive end Dallas Hobbs: Grinch (Sage also key)

Wide receiver Davontavean Martin: Sage

Defensive back Dominick Silvels: Alex Grinch

Defensive end Christian Mejia: Group effort after WSU d-line coach Joe Salave'a's departure

Running back Caleb Perry: Eric Mele

Offensive lineman Robert Valencia: Jim Mastro (McGuire also key)

Wide receiver Easop Winston: Mastro (Dave Nichol also key)

Defensive back Sean Harper: Grinch

Defensive end Preston Hendry: Dave Nichol

Linebacker Cole Dubots: Ken Wilson

Linebacker Faavae Faavae: Nichol (Wilson also key)

Defensive back Josh Talbott: Manning

Defensive back Damion Lee: Wilson

Offensive lineman Abraham Lucas (pictured above): Mele

Wide receiver Anthony White Jr.: Nichol

Defensive back Zaire Webb: Wilson

Offensive lineman Alec Kuzmack: Nichol

Defensive back George Hicks: Wilson

Quarterback Connor Neville: Mele

Defensive back Isaiah Love: Wilson (2016 signee)

* WSU as of press time has not announced the signings of two more potential members of the class: defensive end Kelle Sanders and offensive lineman Dontae Powell. The area recruiters are Mele and Nichol, respectively.

* In case you missed it last night on Twitter, Manning was recruiting during the incredible Super Bowl contest between the Patriots and Falcons, delivering a special message to WR targets.
