WSU ROSTER: The Continent increases land mass; comparing 2017 spring and 2016 heights and weights on entire WSU roster

THE GENERAL RULE of thumb is for football players to gain weight over the winter and into spring ball, before leaning up with the conditioning work that kicks in after spring and throughout the summer. And Cody O’Connell, Derek Moore, Andre Dillard and others are certainly bigger this spring.

Cody O’Connell is the off-season’s biggest gainer, adding 26 pounds.  He’s now listed at 6-8, 370.   DE Derek Moore is right behind him having added 23 pounds. He’s now listed at 6-2, 246.   Andre Dillard (6-5, 310) has added another 15 pounds.  NOTE: Dillard’s transformation has been pronounced, he arrived at WSU in 2014 as a scrawny 245-pounder out of Woodinville.

Josh Watson has added 21 pounds to his frame (6-4, 285).  Frederick Mauigoa has bulked up 16 pounds to 6-3, 305.

But there are, always, also exceptions to the gain-weight-now, lean-up-later tact.  One of those is running back James Williams (pictured above with O'Connell).  Assistant coach Jim Mastro told CF.C last month Williams, WSU’s leading ground gainer this past season as a second-year freshman, needed to improve his stamina (and pass blocking). It’s instructive then to see Williams having trimmed down this winter to 192 pounds, seven pounds less than his 2016 weight.

Over on defense, outside linebackers coach Roy Manning told CF.C the Cougs didn’t get enough heat on the QB last season from the RUSH spot.  Dylan Hanser should be quicker this season, he’s dropped down nearly 10 pounds to 231.  Meanwhile, middle ‘backer Peyton Pelluer, whom dad Scott told CF.C is looking to improve in coverage his senior season, has dropped seven pounds down to 228. DL Kingston Fernandez has also dropped nine pounds, he’s down to 262.  And OL Christian Haangana is down to 358 pounds, 16 pounds less.

Other notable gainers:  QB Luke Falk (6-4, 225) has added another 10 pounds to his frame, as have RUSH Logan Tago (6-3, 245) and LB Frankie Luvu (6-2, 240).

LB Chima Onyeukwu (6-3, 225) has packed on 15 pounds.  DB/Nickel D’Jimon Jones (5-11, 191) and DB Skyler Thomas (5-9, 184) have each added 11 pounds.  WR C.J. Dimry has added 12 pounds (6-5, 213).

Walk on WR Brandon Arconado has bulked up a head-turning 16 pounds (5-11, 181).  And DL Hunter Mattox has tacked on 14 pounds (6-3, 286).
