The two had been building a relationship for the past couple of months, but his WSU scholarship finally arrived.
“It was Tuesday when he (Sage) offered me,” Shough told CF.C. “I was expecting the call from him and he was straight up with me. That’s what you love. He let me know where I stand with them on their board and that they’ve been interested in me for some time.
“Basically, he told me that he just needed to show Coach Leach my film (see below) and get him on board. He told me to be patient, but I got the offer and it’s an amazing feeling. It’s a dream offense for a QB.”
As a junior at Hamilton High in Arizona last season, Shough threw for 2,079 yards, 27 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Thus far, he’s racked up offers from WSU, Michigan, South Carolina, Indiana and multiple others.
Sage, who is running the early point on Shough’s recruitment, has been talking up the WSU offense of late with the young QB.
“He told me that I’d fit perfectly in the system,” Shough said. “They throw the ball a ton and run as well. He’s been telling me a lot about Pullman and sending me pictures of the facilities. It’s been great talking to him. I let him know I’m interested in Washington State.”
Shough, who is eyeing a late summer commitment, added that he’s hoping to take an unofficial visit to WSU sometime in May.
"I’m a West Coast guy,” he said. “All my offers are out of state. I’m looking to get out of state. I grew up watching the Pac-12.
“After I visit other schools, I’ll start narrowing my list down.”
Shough is the third known QB to be offered by Leach and WSU for the 2018 class, joining 4-star signal callers Brevin White and Cammon Cooper.
