3 single-season Coug QB records most likely to fall in 2017

COMING OUT OF spring ball, the recurring theme in the media is that the Cougs will again be explosive -- and perhaps even better on offense despite losing star wideouts River Cracraft and Gabe Marks. Here are three single-season WSU records that are in danger of falling in '17 with Luke Falk under center for his senior season.

1. TD passes (38)
Falk has tossed 38 TD passes each of the last two seasons.  How high could Falk go as a fifth-year senior? Consider that in four games this past season Falk tossed two or fewer TD passes and still nearly hit the 40 TD mark.

2. Passing yards (4,566)
Falk set the record in 2015 and followed it up with 4,468 passing hashes last season. Arguing against Falk setting the single-season passing record: WSU has its deepest, most talented group of running backs since Mike Leach has been at WSU. Arguing for Falk setting the record: those same running backs could be poised to catch a whole lot more passes coming out of the backfield.

3. Completion percentage (70 percent)
A blowout win like the one over Idaho last year isn't necessarily conducive to breaking the record with a short day's work (Falk completed 58.3 percent of his passes in the 56-6 win).  But Falk enters his senior campaign knowing all the ins and outs of the Air Raid. And he is consistent. Falk completed 70.0 percent of his passes last year and 69.3 percent the year before. If WSU does throw short passes more often to the running backs, Falk could easily break his own record and set a new benchmark.

Other WSU QB single-season records to keep an eye on:
300-yard passing games: 10 (Falk, 2015)
Pass completions: 449 (Halliday, 2013)
Pass attempts: 714 (Halliday, 2013)

Sporting News ranks Falk No. 10 nationally among college football's 2017 quarterbacks. "Falk led all returning FBS quarterbacks with 4,468 passing yards last season, and he'll pile on the yards and touchdowns in a third year as the starters in Mike Leach's pass-happy offense. Will the coveted Pac-12 championship follow?" says SN.
