How tough a schedule does Wazzu play in 2017? If you go by most common metric, pretty tough

ONE METRIC has Washington State playing the third-toughest schedule in the Pac-12, and the 25th-toughest slate in the nation.

Washington State also plays five teams who were in bowl games last year, tied for second nationally.

The most commonly used method used to determine schedule strength is to combine opponents’ records from the previous season -- so it's inherently flawed as players graduate, and new ones come in, etc.  But it's a good starting point.

Here's how the Pac-12 shapes up in schedule strength using last year's opponent winning percentage:

1. UCLA (t-16 nationally)
2. Utah (21)
3. Washington State (25)
4. Oregon State (32)
5. Cal (35)
6. ASU (36)
7. Oregon (43)
8. USC (63)
9. Stanford (68)
10. Arizona (77)
11. Colorado (91)
12. Washington (116)

WSU opens the 2017 season with its first five games at home.
