Cougar QB Luke Falk, offensive guard O’Connell in Mel Kiper’s top 5 position rankings for 2018 NFL draft

ESPN DRAFT GURU Mel Kiper this week pegged Washington State’s Luke Falk and Cody O’Connell among the top NFL draft prospects at their respective positions.

Kiper ranks Falk as the No. 2 senior quarterback prospect in the 2018 NFL draft, ahead of No. 3 Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma and behind No. 1 Mason Rudolph of Oklahoma State.

Falk will head into his senior season 27 TD passes behind the Pac-12’s all-time leader career leader (Matt Barkley, USC, 116).  Falk has thrown 38 TD passes each of the last two seasons. 

In 2016, Falk was 443-of-633 passing for 4,468 yards with 38 TDs and 11 INTs.

O’Connell this past season was named first-team All-America on the five major A-A teams, becoming WSU’s second unanimous All-American (Jason Hanson) in program history.

INCYMI, THE CFB watch lists mostly come out in July but the Lott Trophy couldn’t wait.

Among the 42 names on the watch list released this past week: Washington State DE Hercules Mata'afa.

The Lott Trophy watch list includes 17 linebackers, 14 defensive linemen and 11 defensive backs.

Mata’afa this past season posted 13 ½ tackles for loss among his 47 stops, with five sacks. Both the TFL and sack numbers were team highs.
