CF.C Recruiting Diary, 1/22

IT'S APPEARS DECISION time is just around the corner for four Cougar prospects and a JC wide receiver may be in the mix before the 2004 WSU recruiting class is finalized. All this in today's CF.C Recruiting Diary.

Cornerback Byron Velega of Long Beach Poly (Calif.) has narrowed his choices down to UCLA and Washington State, having officially crossed Oregon and California off his list. The cool Pullman winters are somewhat a concern to Velega, but he liked what he saw on his visit to the Palouse last weekend.

"I loved the visit and I love that it's a great college town," he told TheInsiders.com on Wednesday." "I like the defense and the DB coach; they were second in the country in interceptions and I like how they use their corners and how physical they are."

OHIO RUNNING back sensation Delbert Ferguson and his parents played host to WSU coaches Bill Doba and Kelly Skipper yesterday. The visit only seemed to strengthen the probability he would play his college ball as a Cougar.

"I've pretty much made my mind up," Ferguson told TheInsiders.com said. "I feel like I'm going to be a Coug."

MEANWHILE, BACK in the Evergreen State, Sehome High (Bellingham) lineman Matt Eichelberger should have his future pinpointed early next week.

"Matt has already visited Washington and Washington State," Matt's line coach, Stew Egbert, told TheInsiders.com. "He's going to visit Idaho this weekend and then decide on January 27."

ON THE JC front, the Cougs may be interested in 6-2, 185 wide receiver Greg Prator of Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. One of his Panther teammates was current WSU verbal commitment Tyron Brackenridge.

Prator would meet a need the Cougars suddenly felt when Devard Darling announced his early entry into the NFL draft last week.

AND FINALLY, although still technically in the running for Ra'Shon Harris, it appears the 6-5, 280 defensive tackle is leaning toward Oregon. Aside from UO and WSU, Harris has offers from Arizona State and Oregon State. He'll visit with the Beavers this weekend.
