HURTS SO GOOD
After recording six defensive stops against UCLA, safety Billy Newman passed linebacker Ron Childs (1991-94) on the WSU career tackles list. The senior now has 305 notches on his belt and is tied with defensive back Artie Holmes (1985-88) as the seventh most prolific Cougar tackler.
I LOVE LAMONT
Sure, you're all aware that Lamont Thompson's four interceptions on Saturday tied a Pac-10 record (with seven others). And you know his 21 career air-thefts puts him atop the conference charts with former Arizona Wildcat and Green Bay packer DB Chuck Cecil (1984-87). But did you know LT already owned a Pac-10 interception record? His three picks in the 1997 Apple Cup tied the record for most interceptions by a freshman. He shares that record with another Cougar great, Torey Hunter, who stole his three from Arizona State in 1991.
NEWEST MEMBER OF EXCLUSIVE DTD CLUB
When LB Al Genatone picked up that DeShaun Foster fumble on the fly and rumbled 73 yards for paydirt, not only was it "my favorite play of the year,"—an honor I'm sure the entire Genatone family will cherish—it was also the sixth time a Cougar defender has scored a touchdown this season. He joins fellow endzone visiting D-mates Newman, Thompson, James Price, Raonall Smith, and Erik Coleman.
THEY SAW THIS ONE COMING
One of the few preseason pundits—other than myself—to forecast good things for the Cougs was ATS Consultants. Although their 6-5 prediction almost reads like an insult now, they did call for a WSU victory over UCLA. For a look back on other "experts" who gave Wazzu a fair chance this season, read "Silver Linings," originally published last summer on these pages.
LUCKY NUMBER 13
The victory over UCLA was just the thirteenth Cougar win over the Bruins. However, WSU has a six to five advantage over the Westwoodies over the past thirteen years. And thanks in large part to seven UCLA giveaways, WSU is best in the Pac-10 with a plus-thirteen turnover margin.
I SACK, THEREFORE I AM
DD Acholonu leads the Pac-10 in sacks with ten. Fellow DE Issac Brown is third on the conference list with 8 visits to the QB. WSU leads the Pac with 29 sacks, despite coming up empty in that department against Montana State and Oregon.
THE RARE NINES
Only two teams in WSU history have won nine or more regular season games, a short list the 2001 Cougs hope to join next weekend with a win in Tempe. The 1930 Crimson Soldiers coached by Babe Hollingbery and starring Mel Hein, finished their schedule a perfect 9-0, before falling in the Rose Bowl to Alabama. The 1997 Cougs played out their first 11 with 10 wins, and then lost by two seconds to Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Two other legendary Wazzu squads, the 1988 and 1992 editions, secured their ninth win with post-season Bowl victories.
