Scott Davis' Diary: Get Loose On The Palouse

Cougfans! This is it, my final diary of the year for you! Hope you found my weekly entries over the summer to be informative, and that they helped to make everyone an ever better Cougar fan. And I hope to see all of you fans at this season's games. Because we are ready to put on a show. We've worked too hard not to have a good season..

Summer workouts have finally come to a close, and the season is right around the corner. As a team, we have next week off... to prepare for double days. This is where the real fun begins. And here's where we see how the summer workouts pay off..

I am ready to go out and hit somebody. We've done pass skelly for too long with the receivers telling the defense they would've broken this tackle... Or that they would've held on to that ball after a big hit.

I know the defense is ready for pads. Will Derting has a lot of aggression that is built up inside of him.. and I can't wait to see him unleash it on somebody.

This weekend, I'm headed home to see friends and family; because I know once the season starts I won't be going home for a long while. Even though I only live two hours away -- with the demands on our time and our responsibilities in-season -- we don't have time to go much of anywhere.

Right now, I'm trying to convince my grandma to come stay with me for double days and take care of me. You know, to cook and clean a little, make sure I get to practice on time and have a ride. I love my grandma.

I'll tell you one thing though, I am not just going to sit around the house all day and be all lazy. There is no way I'm going to let two months of hard work and running go to waste. I'm going to go do a little training with my high school team.

Kamiakin has a good summer program that helps kids develop football skills at a young age. The school has a great weight room; one that really lends itself to helping kids learn to lift -- and to work as a team.

I'm planning to stay in shape by heading over there in the mornings; doing some lifting and running with the younger kids. And I'm going to try to bring my younger brother along so he can get use to running. He heads to Western Washington in August.

On a side note, Mike Tyson is fighting tonight. As you might know, Steve Dildine and I are always in competition with one another over everything.

Yesterday, coach (Rob) Oviatt brought in a weigh-in list on Iron Mike; with weight, height, reach, and other measurables.

So come August 8, Steve and I are planning on having our own showdown.

We're both going to head home and train for a week, and when we come back, we're having a boxing match. We'll have the tale of the tape at one of those big ceremonial weigh-ins, and then the big show. (Unless we get told, "Um, no.")

Five one-minute rounds with one minute rest. The three knock down rule is in effect and you cannot be saved by the bell. We're calling it "Get Loose in the Palouse."

Just ask around to see who won. I put my money on me (not literally, of course..) I have the reach.

Cougfans, thanks for taking time out to read my journal each week. Go Cougs!

Scott Davis is a sophomore outside linebacker from Kennewick's Kamiakin High, where he was a three-time All-State running back. He and teammate Cody Boyd graciously volunteered to give Cougar fans a window on the world of pre-season football preparation with weekly diaries.
