RECRUITING: Cougs wow McKay on visit

THE ELECTRIFYING Gardner McKay II was in town this weekend on an official visit -- the Cougs clearly made a strong impression on the California native. CF.C talked to McKay on Monday afternoon to get his take on the trip and what's on tap for him this week. There's also been a change in the leaders' list of the game breaking defensive back from Crenshaw High.

Gardner McKay II liked everything about his trip to Washington State this past weekend -- Coaches, facilities, campus, academics -- you name it. He liked it all.

"It was wonderful," McKay told on Monday afternoon. "I got to see the facilities, look at the classes, spend time with the coaches... it was just great."

McKay didn't give his oral commitment this weekend but his list of leaders has now been whittled down from four to two. The Cougs are in a tie at the top with the Beavers for the services of the speed merchant out of Los Angeles.

"It's between Washington State and Oregon State."

McKay tripped to Corvalis and Oregon State back in November.

Before his visit to Pullman this weekend, McKay said he was looking for a school whose coaches could help further his talents. The Cougar coaching staff fit the bill and then some for the 6-0, 160 pound corner and special teams standout.

"The coaches, oh man," said McKay of the WSU staff. "They're some of the best coaches I've ever met. Just great."

Colorado is also making a late play, having recently offered the Crenshaw High star and coming by for an in-home visit tonight. Washington State will be visiting McKay later this week as will OSU. Could a decision be imminent?

"I'm going to think about it this week."

The player affectionately referred to by his coach Robert Garrett as "Big Time!" is academically qualified. Coach Garrett has routinely gotten Crenshaw's top players NCAA qualified through his Academic Touchdown Club in recent years.

On the season, McKay scored 10 touchdowns and snared 7 interceptions for the Crenshaw Cougars. He will participate in the Cali-Florida Bowl on Jan 2
