Instant impact touches down in Pullman

WHERE IN THE WORLD is Lorenzo Bursey? If you asked that question at 6:30pm Wednesday evening, the answer would be somewhere over the skies of Utah. But if you wanted to know his whereabouts a mere few hours later, the answer would be Pullman.

Early Wednesday evening, Bursey (5-9, 170) was just hours away from touching down in Pullman and beginning his Cougar career.

"I'm very excited," Bursey told during a brief stopover in Utah.

Bursey begins college classes at WSU this Monday along with incoming Cougar quarterback Arkelon Hall, the pair having enrolled in the late summer school session at Washington State.

"I wanted to get a head start," said Bursey. "I wanted to learn the plays and get in football shape."

By enrolling in summer classes at Washington State, Bursey is able to join the team for the summer's voluntary workouts.

Coach Bill Doba has said Bursey has an excellent shot to play immediately, comparing him to a true freshman sensation from last season, wide receiver Michael Bumpus.

A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL junior college transfer, Bursey will have three years to play three at WSU. He said the WSU coaches have talked to him primarily about playing in the slot and returning kickoffs.

"And maybe a little at running back, but I'm not sure exactly how it'll go," he said.

He played a similar role at West Los Angeles College last season, averaging nearly 6 yards a carry and 300-plus receiving yards coming out of the slot for West LA. Doba has also left open the possibility that Bursey, along with incoming WR Brandon Gibson, could even play cornerback if need be -- both are that good of athletes. But all things being equal, look for both to line up on offense.

Bursey spent his spring wrapping up his AA degree, working out and preparing for the move to Washington State.

BURSEY IS PLENTY fast (4.4 speed in the 40) but rather than flat-out foot speed, his true value lies elsewhere.

An explosive threat every time he touches the ball, Bursey possesses an amazing ability to make fast-twitch cuts and changes of direction at virtually top speed, leaving would-be defenders clutching at nothing but air. He has excellent vision and quickness, and moves and runs with surprising power.
